Appearing in ChatGPT means being among the sources that ChatGPT search reads and links when building its answer, which requires the OAI-SearchBot crawler to be allowed, indexed pages, and a passage that answers the question. Busca Orgânica prepares this part of the website and measures visits from chatgpt.com in Google Analytics.
To appear in ChatGPT, your company needs to pass three filters that ChatGPT search applies in sequence: the OpenAI crawler can read the page, the page is in an index that the search queries, and the passage answers the question better than the competitor's. This page covers only ChatGPT, which has its own crawler, rules, and measurement. Search interest in the topic is still small and very specific: "como aparecer no chatgpt" (how to appear in ChatGPT) gets 50 searches per month and "seo para chatgpt", 20 (DataForSEO, Oct/2026).
What does appearing in ChatGPT mean?
It means having your company's name, and ideally your website's link, inside the text ChatGPT writes when someone asks for a supplier, a service, or a solution. This happens through two paths, and only one of them depends on what you change on your website now.
In the first path, the model answers with what it learned in training, without a source link. A brand appears there if it was already mentioned in many public texts before the training cutoff, and no change made today will immediately alter that answer. In the second, ChatGPT runs a web search before answering and shows the sources it used next to the text. The technique behind it is retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), described in the paper Lewis et al., Retrieval-Augmented Generation (arXiv, 2020): the system retrieves documents and writes the answer based on them. Anyone not among the retrieved documents does not make it into the text. The mechanism is explained in plain language in the post what is RAG.
What is the difference between this page and full GEO?
This is a child page in the GEO family with a platform-specific scope: a single assistant, with its own crawler and measurement. The table shows where each related question is answered, so you can open the page that fits your case.
| If your question is | The right page |
|---|---|
| How your brand appears across all AI assistants at once | GEO, the full service |
| How to write the text that AI extracts and cites | SEO for AI |
| How to become a source for the AI summary within Google | AI Overviews |
| Crawlers, robots.txt, rendering, and llms.txt | website optimization for AI |
| How to compare providers before hiring | how to choose a GEO agency |
| How to appear in ChatGPT specifically | This page |
Which OpenAI crawlers need to read your website?
The crawler that determines ChatGPT search is OAI-SearchBot, not GPTBot. OpenAI separates the two on the page OpenAI crawlers (GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User): GPTBot collects content for training, OAI-SearchBot powers the linked search results, and ChatGPT-User opens a page when the user asks for it during a conversation. In practice, a company can opt out of training by blocking GPTBot and remain eligible as a search source, as long as OAI-SearchBot is allowed.
The block that most often removes companies from ChatGPT search is not in robots.txt. It is in the hosting firewall or the content delivery network (CDN), which blocks unknown bots by default. That is why, in the diagnostic, we check the file and also the server access log: if OAI-SearchBot shows up receiving a 403 error, the robots.txt rule does not matter. Per-crawler configuration, serving text that does not depend on scripts, and the rest of the technical layer are handled by our website optimization for AI service.
How does the work to appear in ChatGPT work in practice?
The work follows the order of the three filters, and each step ends with an item the client can verify.
- List of test questions. Each test question is written in the buyer's voice, with the service, the region, and the problem, and never with your brand name.
- Clean-session testing. We ask each question with search enabled, with no history or account memory, and record the date, linked sources, and brands cited. A session with history skews the test, because the assistant tends to repeat what the user has already mentioned.
- Crawler access. We check robots.txt, the firewall, and the HTML delivered to OAI-SearchBot.
- Presence in the index. ChatGPT search combines its own crawler with third-party search providers, so we verify whether the answering pages are indexed on Google and Bing.
- A passage that answers. The page meant to be a source gets a first sentence that answers the question, with data only the company has, following the SEO for AI writing standard.
- Consistent company details everywhere. Name, address, phone, and service area identical on the website, the Google Business Profile, and directories, as recommended by the guide Business details in Search (Google). Mentions on third-party sites reinforce the entity.
- Retesting and GA4 review. At each review, the test spreadsheet is redone with the same list, and Google Analytics 4 (GA4) shows traffic from chatgpt.com separately.
How do you measure whether a company appears in ChatGPT?
No tool shows how many times ChatGPT has cited a brand. Measurement combines four signals, each with its own blind spot, and it is the combination that allows an honest reading.
| Signal | Where to see it | What it does not show |
|---|---|---|
| Visits from chatgpt.com | GA4, acquisition report by source | People who read the answer and did not click the link. |
| Citations in test questions | Test spreadsheet, with date and clean session | The answer another user receives in another conversation. |
| Sources linked by ChatGPT | The links shown next to the answer | How much weight each source had in the writing. |
| Brand searches on Google | Search Console | Whether the search came from an AI conversation or another channel. |
Concrete example: what GA4 recorded in one of our projects
Between February and October 20, 2026, the channels report for Cabrera Advogados showed 11,000 active users, and 22 of them arrived through AI assistants. The law firm, based in Guarulhos, hired us for SEO and a new website, with no dedicated GEO work, and that is exactly why the data was useful to us: before selling a new channel to the client, we measure how large it already is on their site. The full numbers are in the Cabrera Advogados SEO case study in Guarulhos.
An illustrative example, with no real client, shows what usually changes on the page. A hydraulic parts distributor had only the phrase "request your quote" on the product page. In the version prepared for ChatGPT, the first sentence states what the part is, what pressure it handles, and which region the company delivers to, with the lead time listed in the client's records.
Where does appearing in ChatGPT make the most difference?
It makes the most difference when buyers compare options before requesting a proposal and use ChatGPT to build a shortlist: technical B2B purchases, software, professional services, and suppliers serving other businesses remotely. In those cases, being left out of the answer means being left out of the comparison.
It is not the priority for three profiles. Urgent, local service businesses, such as locksmiths or towing, depend more on the Google map, and the path there is Google Business Profile. Companies without indexed pages first need an SEO foundation, because ChatGPT does not cite what it cannot find. And anyone who needs demand for a campaign with a fixed date should not count on AI answers, which change from one conversation to the next.
What about Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot?
The other assistants follow the same logic of searching before answering, with their own rules. At Google, Gemini and the Search summary work from what Googlebot has already crawled, according to the page AI features and your website, and sites that are already well indexed there have a head start. Microsoft Copilot relies on Bing, and Perplexity uses its own crawler. Searches about how to appear in these three had no measurable volume of their own (DataForSEO, Oct/2026), which is why they are included in the GEO project rather than on separate pages.
How much does it cost to appear in ChatGPT?
We do not sell ChatGPT optimization on its own. It is one front of the SEO, GEO, and AEO project, which Busca Orgânica sells as a package, and its weight in the plan depends on five factors:
- State of technical access. Firewalls, CDNs, and script-built sites need fixing before any copywriting.
- Who maintains the website. The cost changes depending on whether the technical fixes are handled by our team or by the developer who already manages the site.
- Size of the question list. Each test question is redone at every review.
- Pages to create or rewrite. This depends on how many questions the site does not yet answer.
- Existing SEO foundation. A site without a page per service starts with the structure.
For organic search, Busca Orgânica offers a contractual performance guarantee, with targets agreed at the start of the project. Presence in ChatGPT answers is not part of that target: it is tested and reported in reviews, with no citation commitment, as described on the guaranteed SEO page.
