SEO for AI is the content strategy that writes each page so assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity can extract a passage from it and use it in their answer, with the company name included. At Busca Orgânica, this changes the content plan, which comes from the buyer's real questions, and the copy, which opens with the answer and backs every data point with a source.
Busca Orgânica's SEO for AI work starts by changing the question. Instead of "which keyword has volume?", we ask "what does the buyer ask ChatGPT before calling a supplier?". That produces the content plan, the first sentence of each page and the FAQ answers. This is the content side of the GEO family; the full service, with citation tracking and mentions on news and industry sites, is there.
What is SEO for AI?
In practice, SEO for AI is a set of writing rules applied page by page so the right passage gets extracted. The assistant does not read the page like a visitor: it retrieves pieces, compares them with other sources and builds its own answer. This process is called retrieval-augmented generation and is explained in the post what is RAG. The winning page is the one with a passage that answers on its own, names the company and includes a verifiable fact.
Behind these rules is what Google calls E-E-A-T, short for experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness, the topic of the post what is E-E-A-T. Website optimization for AI makes sure the machine can read the site; SEO for AI makes sure the content deserves to be cited. One is plumbing, the other is content and authority strategy. The plumbing has its own page, website optimization for AI.
What changes from content SEO to copy that AI cites
The foundation is the same as SEO for businesses: a crawlable site, one page per search intent and authority built over time. Content SEO produces copy so the page ranks on Google and gets the click. Here, the target is the passage the assistant takes into its answer, with or without a click, and that changes six aspects of the work.
| Aspect | Content SEO | Copy to be cited by AI |
|---|---|---|
| Unit of work | The entire page | The two- or three-sentence passage. |
| Content plan | Keyword with search volume | The buyer's full question. |
| Opening | Introduction that sets the context | Answer in the first sentence, with the term from the question. |
| Proof | Links and mentions of the site | Data with a linked source in the same sentence. |
| Brand | Logo and footer | Name written the same way across the site and on other sites. |
| Goal | The click | The citation, with or without a click. |
At Busca Orgânica, this difference becomes a working document: each page in the plan reaches the writer with the main question, the FAQ questions and the sourced data it needs to cite. The copy is written only after that.
How ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity choose the passage they cite
Each assistant searches and displays sources in its own way, and each company's public documentation says different things. The table summarizes what is documented and what it requires from the copy.
| Assistant | What is documented | What it requires from the copy |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | OpenAI uses the OAI-SearchBot crawler to show and link websites in search-enabled answers, according to the OpenAI crawlers page. | A passage that answers on its own and a page open to that crawler. |
| Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode | For Search AI features, Google says there are no extra requirements beyond those of regular search, in AI features and your website. | An indexed page, eligible to appear with a snippet (the text excerpt that accompanies the link in the result) and with the answer close to the searched term. |
| Perplexity and Copilot | There is no equivalent public documentation on how the source is chosen. | The same passage rules, plus brand presence on external sources, verified in GEO tracking. |
What they have in common is that none of them cites the whole page: they all extract. That is why our copywriting work is the same for all three, and the difference between them shows up in technical access and measurement. When the answer comes from the Search summary, Google's own rules are on the AI Overviews page.
How do we write a page to be cited?
Busca Orgânica is a technology company with a proprietary methodology, headquartered in Guarulhos (SP), and has served more than 700 clients since 2021 (Grupo Orion corporate materials, Sep/2026). The copywriting part of that methodology is seven rules every page meets before going live, whether new or rewritten.
- We choose the page's main question from the searches of five or more words that Search Console already shows for the site, not from the keyword alone.
- We check whether the question already has a page on the site. If two pages answer the same thing, one keeps the answer and the other changes topic.
- We write the direct answer at the top in one or two sentences, 250 to 400 characters long, with the term from the question in the first sentence.
- We open each section with the sentence that answers its heading; the detail comes afterward.
- We write each FAQ answer in 60 to 120 words, starting with the answer and naming the subject, so it works when extracted.
- We replace adjectives with data: timelines, standards, materials or numbers, with the source linked in the same sentence.
- We write the company and service names exactly the same way on every page.
Example: before and after on our own website
We applied these rules to Busca Orgânica's own website first. When we reviewed our content at the end of September 2026, many pages opened by beating around the bush and many FAQ answers did not hold up when extracted. Three real passages, before and after the rewrite:
| Passage | Before | After | What changed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opening of this page | "SEO for AI starts with an uncomfortable question for anyone who already invests in search…" | The direct answer that opens this page, with the definition in the first sentence | The rhetorical question came out and the answer went in. |
| FAQ answer about real estate agencies | "Yes. With a well-built organic strategy…" | "Yes, organic search works for real estate agencies and developers when each development and each neighborhood served has its own page…" | The subject and the condition went into the first sentence. |
| Opening of a service page | "There is more than one way to show up on Google. Learn about each format…" | Definition of the service in the first sentence and, in the second, what Busca Orgânica does in it | The invitation became an answer. |
None of these adjustments required a new tool. They required written rules and page-by-page review, which is what we deliver in the project.
Where does SEO for AI make the biggest difference?
SEO for AI pays off most on pages that already rank on Google but open by beating around the bush. The page appears in search, the assistant's crawler reaches it and finds no passage that answers on its own, so it cites another source. The passages in the table above, taken from our own site, show that pattern: an opening with a rhetorical question, an invitation instead of an answer and a "Yes." with no subject.
That is why the first page to rewrite is not the newest one on the site: it is the one Search Console already shows for question-style searches and that, when opened, does not answer in the first sentence. It already has the index's trust, and what is missing is the copy. A site with many service pages in this situation gains more from rewriting than a new site, which still has to earn rankings before it has anything to be extracted.
Health and law have an extra layer: the copy must fit the advertising rules of the Federal Council of Medicine, CFM (Resolution 2,336/2023), and of the OAB (Provision 205/2021). In practice, these rules push the copy toward objective information with no promises, the kind of passage most likely to be cited.
When the crawler cannot read the page, rewriting does not come first. If the text only appears after a script runs, or if the assistant's crawler is blocked in robots.txt, the new passage never reaches the machine. In that case, website optimization for AI comes first, and the copy goes in once the page can be read in full.
What SEO for AI does not guarantee
Rewriting well does not force any assistant to use your passage. It may prefer a site with more authority, switch sources on the next query or answer without citing anyone. The honest commitment is to work on what is under control, such as copy, clarity, data and consistency, and to measure progress without promising that the brand will appear for every question. In organic search, Busca Orgânica works with a contractual performance guarantee, with targets agreed at the start of the project. In SEO for AI, the pages on the rewrite and creation list are project deliverables, and an assistant's choice of passage is outside the target, as detailed in the SEO with a guarantee model.
How much does SEO for AI cost?
The price of SEO for AI is counted in pages: how many existing pages will be rewritten and how many need to be created for questions the site does not yet answer. A rewritten page starts from an address, a ranking and part of the copy that already exist; a created page starts from scratch. On top of that, the following also matter:
- Whether question research already exists or needs to be done from scratch, with Search Console and conversations with the sales team.
- How much sourced data the client already has to replace adjectives with facts, or whether it needs to be gathered.
- Whether the sector has advertising rules, such as health and law, that call for a specific review.
The proposal lists which pages change, in what order and what will be measured at each stage.
Mistakes that keep AI away from your content
The first three mistakes showed up on our own website in the September 2026 review; the fourth is what the second of the seven rules prevents. Each one takes the page out of contention for a different reason:
- Opening with a rhetorical question. The first passage, the natural candidate for extraction, answers nothing, and the answer sits paragraphs below.
- FAQ that starts with just "Yes." When extracted, the answer loses its subject and condition, and the assistant prefers the source that states both in the first sentence.
- An invitation instead of an answer. Phrases like "learn about each format" delay the content; for the machine, the passage is empty.
- Two pages for the same question. Neither becomes the right passage, and one of them needs to change topic.
