GEO (generative engine optimization) is the work of getting a brand found and cited in the answers of ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI summaries. At Busca Orgânica, GEO starts with SEO: we measure who AI cites today for your audience's questions and change pages, data and mentions so the brand makes that list.
Hiring GEO (generative engine optimization) from Busca Orgânica means putting a technology team to look at your company from the side of the person asking the AI. The questions are your buyer's: which supplier solves this problem, who serves my state, how much does it cost. At Busca Orgânica, GEO is not sold on its own: it is part of the same project as SEO and AEO, because all three fronts work on the same pages and the same brand authority. Busca Orgânica is a technology company with its own methodology, headquartered in Guarulhos (SP), with more than 700 clients served since 2021 (Grupo Orion corporate material, Sep/2026).
What is GEO (generative engine optimization)?
GEO is optimizing a brand's presence so that generative engines, the systems that write an answer instead of listing links, find, understand and cite that brand. Behind them are large language models (LLMs), like the ones that power ChatGPT and Gemini. While SEO competes for a position in the results list, GEO competes for a place inside the text the AI writes, where users often read the company name and never even click.
The term was proposed in 2023 in the paper GEO: Generative Engine Optimization (Aggarwal et al., arXiv). According to the paper, content changes such as citing sources and including statistics increased visibility in generated answers by up to 40%, with effects varying by topic. It is a lab test, run on a set of questions assembled by the authors, not a promise for a real website. The concept explained for beginners is in the post what is GEO; this page covers the service.
GEO, AEO, AI Overviews and SEO for AI: what's the difference
These terms show up together and get confused all the time, like GEO and AEO (answer engine optimization), but each has its own scope. The table summarizes where each front works so you don't choose in the dark.
| Front | What it targets | Core tactic |
|---|---|---|
| GEO | Brand citation in any generative engine | Topical authority and citable content at scale. |
| AEO | Becoming the answer extracted by the engine | Direct answers, FAQ and structured data. |
| AI Overviews | Appearing in Google's AI summary | Content Google can synthesize and attribute. |
| SEO for AI | Adapting the SEO strategy to consumption by LLMs | E-E-A-T, clarity and verifiable sources. |
| Website optimization for AI | Making the site readable for AI crawlers | Crawling, rendering, structured data (schema) and performance. |
In practice, GEO is the umbrella and the others are slices of it. This page covers the complete service, and each slice has its own page. Direct answers are covered in AEO and Google's summary in AI Overviews. The content strategy is in SEO for AI, and the technical side, covering bots, llms.txt and WebMCP, in website optimization for AI.
Three more child pages cover buying and platform slices: showing up in ChatGPT deals only with OpenAI's bot and measurement, the GEO agency page guides those hiring the complete project, and GEO consulting serves companies whose team executes with our guidance.
How AI decides which sources to cite
Two paths bring a brand into a generative answer: what the model learned in training and what the assistant searches on the web before answering. In the diagnosis sheet, we separate the two by what appears on screen. An answer that includes a source link indicates a live search, and the job is to have the page the assistant retrieves. An answer without a link, citing the brand or a competitor from memory, comes from training, and then what matters is how much the brand already appears on third-party sites. The same question can follow one path in ChatGPT and another in Gemini, and the sheet records which one it was in each assistant.
Each assistant searches its own way, which is why GEO looks at several at once. Google Search's AI features start from Google's index, as described in the documentation AI features and your website (Google Search Central). ChatGPT fetches pages with OpenAI's own bots. Perplexity and Copilot publish less about the criteria they use. A brand cited on Google may not exist for someone asking ChatGPT, and the reverse also happens.
Two signals belong to GEO. The first is the entity: the brand always written the same way on the site, in the Google Business Profile and on news sites, tied to the same topic. The second is mentions in outlets that AI already uses as sources, which we work on with digital press relations. Both feed what Google calls E-E-A-T, short for experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness, described in the guide Creating helpful, reliable, people-first content.
How does GEO work at Busca Orgânica?
Our method has two halves: what we measure before touching any page and what we change afterwards. The sequence repeats in every project.
- Audience questions. We gather the questions buyers ask before closing a deal: long searches from Search Console, questions the client's sales team hears and topics from the briefing.
- Who gets cited today. We ask those questions to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot and check Google's AI Mode and AI Overviews. We record date, assistant, exact question and brands cited, because the answer changes from one session to the next.
- Sources AI uses. We classify the links that appear in the answers: industry portal, directory, competitor site, manufacturer, government agency. This map shows where the brand needs to be.
- Answer page. Each type of question gets a page in the structure of our own search engine optimization methodology, with service, state served, industry and service by city, the same structure as our SEO for businesses.
- Proprietary data. We publish what only the client has, such as real lead times, standards met and sourced results, so AI finds a fact that doesn't exist on any other site.
- Third-party mentions. We bring the brand to the sources the map in step 3 pointed to, with press relations and consistent listings.
- Measurement. We repeat the questions from step 2 in the project reviews and track, in Google Analytics, visits from AI assistants separately from organic visits.
This page structure explains why the right page matters. Someone asking an assistant for an SEO company in Curitiba may get different sources than someone asking for the service without a city. That is why location pages, like service in São Paulo and service in Paraná, are part of the GEO plan, as are the other locations in the list of states served. In Busca Orgânica's client base (Oct/2026), São Paulo, where our headquarters is, has 489 projects since 2021, and Paraná, 15 since 2022: these are markets with different regional questions and sources, and each one needs its own page.
Where does GEO make the most difference?
GEO pays off most when buyers research a lot before deciding and already use AI assistants in that research. That is the case for technical purchasing in manufacturing, where the engineer asks which supplier meets a standard or a tolerance. It also applies to health and beauty, where the patient asks about a procedure before booking an appointment. Both sectors carry weight in our portfolio: 159 manufacturing projects and 41 health and beauty projects in Busca Orgânica's client base (Oct/2026), audiences in which the technical question usually reaches the assistant before it reaches the salesperson.
GEO also works hand in hand with B2B prospecting: someone who receives a sales outreach may look up the supplier's name before replying, and the assistant needs to find your company tied to the right service.
Who GEO is not the first step for: a company without its own website, with few pages, no organic traffic and no data to publish. AI cites what it finds and trusts; without that foundation, the project starts with the weight on SEO and GEO gains room afterwards, on the same structure. We also don't recommend GEO for those who need demand next month, because AI citation takes time and has no set date.
A practical example: one question, four assistants
The example below is illustrative, with no real client, and shows the sheet we build in the diagnosis for each audience question. Imagine a plastic packaging manufacturer in Paraná and the question "which company makes packaging for frozen food in Paraná?".
| Sheet field | Sample entry | What it becomes in the plan |
|---|---|---|
| Assistant and date | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot, checked on the same day | A comparison between assistants, not an isolated screenshot. |
| Brands cited | Two competitors and a packaging portal | List of who holds the space today. |
| Linked sources | Industry portal, distributor catalog, competitor product page | Where to seek mentions and what type of page to create. |
| Does the brand appear? | It doesn't appear in any of the four | The question becomes a priority. |
| Site page that answers | Only the home page, without the word frozen | Product answer page, with real standards and lead times. |
Now, real data from an SEO project. On the new website of Cabrera Advogados, a law firm in Guarulhos, Google Analytics recorded 22 users coming from AI from February to October 20, 2026. In the same tool and period, the organic channel brought in 6,900 users, as shown on the Cabrera Advogados case page. The AI channel exists, is measurable and is still small compared to organic. That is why our GEO starts with SEO, not in place of it.
What GEO delivers and what it doesn't promise
Optimizing for generative engines increases the likelihood of the brand being cited, because it makes the content more trustworthy and easier to extract. That is not the same as guaranteeing an appearance. AI answers change with every query, vary by model and face competition from other sources. Anyone promising a fixed presence in ChatGPT is selling what they don't control.
What we deliver is verifiable: the sheet of questions and sources, the pages created or rewritten, the data published, the mentions work and the reading of the AI channel. In organic, Busca Orgânica works with a performance guarantee written into the contract, with targets agreed at the start of the project. In GEO, the brand's citation in AI is not part of that count: it is measured and reported, and the contract rules are in SEO with a guarantee.
How much does a GEO project cost?
What moves the price of a GEO (generative engine optimization) project the most is the size of the sheet: how many audience questions go into it and in how many assistants each one is re-run at every review. A clinic with three procedures has fewer questions to track than a manufacturer with dozens of product lines, and each additional question is recorded in every assistant. We don't publish a fixed price. Besides the sheet, these factors weigh in:
- SEO foundation. If the site doesn't yet have pages by service, state and industry, the project includes that structure before GEO.
- Competition in the answers. The more strong portals and competitors already cited on the topic, the more authority and mentions work.
- Available proprietary data. A company that already measures lead times, tests and results publishes sooner than one that needs to gather that data.
- Who works on the site. Whether the site was developed by us or by another vendor changes the implementation time.
The proposal separates commitment from tracking: organic deliverables and indicators, with targets in the contract, and the AI channel, measured and reported with no appearance target.
Common mistakes that keep a brand out of AI answers
- Measuring only the Google ranking and never asking the assistants who they cite in your market.
- The brand written in different ways on the site, in the Google Business Profile and on portals, which confuses the machine about which entity it is.
- Unsourced numbers and empty promises, which take the page off the list of trusted sources.
- Treating AI as a project separate from SEO, duplicating content instead of reinforcing the same authority.
- Thinking a technical file solves everything on its own: robots.txt and llms.txt are a condition for reading, not a reason for citation.
