Ranking first on Google can mean five different spots: the ad, the AI summary, the Maps pack, the featured snippet, and the first organic result, each decided by its own system. The same page can appear in more than one of them, such as being cited in the AI summary and listed in organic results, but the map shows the Business Profile and the ad requires a paid campaign.

Before any proposal to rank first on Google, Busca Orgânica opens each search the company wants to compete for, in the cities where it sells, and notes what occupies the top of the screen. That snapshot shapes the work: a local service business may be one well-completed profile away from the top of the map, while a manufacturer selling across Brazil needs to compete for the first organic result and for AI answers. Busca Orgânica is a technology company with its own methodology, headquartered in Guarulhos (SP), with more than 700 clients served since 2021 (Grupo Orion corporate materials, Sep/2026).

What does ranking first on Google mean today?

Ranking first on Google means occupying the first visible spot on the SERP, the search engine results page, for a specific search. On the traditional SERP, that meant the first blue link. Today Google builds each results page with different blocks depending on the search, and first place can belong to any of them. The guide How Google Search Works explains that the relevance of each result considers factors such as the searcher's location, language, and device, which already shows why there is no single first place that is the same for everyone.

The five top spots and what each one requires

The table summarizes who decides each spot, what the company needs to have, and how the cost works. It is the framework we use in the diagnostic to separate Busca Orgânica's work from paid media.

Top spotWho decidesWhat the company needsHow the cost works
Ad (Google Ads)Ad auction, based on bid and ad qualityAn active campaign, with budget and a landing pageYou pay for each click while the campaign is active; at Grupo Orion, this is handled by Mídia & Tráfego.
AI summary (AI Overviews)Google AI systems, based on pages already indexedAn indexed page with a clear answer and sourced dataNo cost per click; investment in content and SEO.
Local Maps packRelevance, distance, and prominence of the businessA verified Business Profile, the right category, reviews, and a linked websiteFree profile; management work and local pages.
Featured snippetGoogle automated systems, with no request from the siteA paragraph, list, or table that answers the question right at the startNo cost per click; copywriting work.
#1 organic resultGoogle ranking algorithmA page dedicated to the search, a technical foundation, and authorityNo cost per click; SEO project.

Three details from the official documentation change the strategy. For the AI summary, Google's page on AI features and your website states that there is no extra technical requirement: the page only needs to be in the index and eligible to be shown with a text snippet in regular search. For the map, Google lists three criteria in its tips to improve local ranking: relevance, distance, and prominence. For the featured snippet, the featured snippets documentation explains that selection is automatic. The work for each front is described on the pages for AI Overviews, Google Business Profile, and AEO for direct answers.

Why does first place change from one person to another?

A business owner searching for their own service at the office sees a different screen than a customer in another neighborhood or city. Distance matters on the map, and the device changes how many blocks appear before the first link. That is why we do not use screenshots of searches made by the client as a measure of position: we use the average position in Google Search Console, which aggregates the real impressions of everyone who ran the search.

This effect is significant in Grande São Paulo, the region where most of our portfolio is concentrated: 186 projects in the capital and 124 in Guarulhos, the city where we are headquartered, according to Busca Orgânica's client base (internal dashboard, Oct/2026). A service search made in Guarulhos may show different businesses on the map than the same search made in the capital, because the distance to the searcher is factored in. For businesses that serve several cities, this calls for city pages on the website, since a Business Profile can only exist where there is a real address or service area.

Which first place is realistic for each type of business?

Type of businessMost realistic spotWhat usually holds it back
Local service business serving one city or regionMaps pack and first organic result for searches with the city nameA profile without the right category and a website without a page for each service.
B2B company or manufacturer selling across BrazilFirst organic result for the product or process search and citation in the AI summaryThe entire catalog on one page and spec sheets only in PDF, with no text on the page.
E-commerceOrganic results for category pages; product ads are handled by paid mediaCategories without text and product pages copied from the manufacturer.

Not every search is worth the effort of competing for first place. For a store selling the same product as large retailers, the top organic spot for the generic search is unlikely in the short term, and a category page with its own angle delivers more. For a service business that serves a single city, competing for first place nationally makes no sense: its customers are on the city map and in searches with the region's name.

Example: event service organized by region

Vip Drinks, which provides bar service and chocolate fountains for events in Guarulhos, went from 0 to at least 100 qualified quote requests per month with SEO structured by service region, from Jul/2022 to 2026, according to the click tracking we implemented. In the table above, it is the local service type: the competition was for searches for the service with the region's name, which the site began to answer with pages and copy for each service region, and the case measures quote requests, not position.

First place or first page: what is the difference?

Being on the first page means appearing among the results Google shows before the user asks for more; ranking first means occupying a specific spot on that screen, for a specific search. The first goal is about presence and the second is about competition: to reach the top, the page must be the best answer for that search, while to make the first page it only needs to be among the best. If you want to hire the work of reaching the first page, you will find scope, timeline, and contract in getting your website on Google's first page; this page covers the top spot and who holds it.

How we work to reach the first organic result

When the realistic spot is first place in organic results, Busca Orgânica's SEO work follows this order:

  1. Keyword research. We find out how customers describe the service when they search, before writing any page, and we group searches by intent.
  2. One page per intent. Each purchase search gets a dedicated page, so the site does not compete with itself for first place.
  3. On-page SEO. We adjust what is inside the page: title tag, meta description, headings, image alt text, and the answer right in the first paragraph.
  4. Comparison with the page at the top. We open the page ranking first and note whether it is dedicated to the search, what it answers that yours does not, and how many sites cite it; the difference becomes the list of adjustments for your page.
  5. Measurement by search. We track the average position of each target search in Search Console and, through click tracking, the leads it generates.

For organic search, Busca Orgânica offers a contractual performance guarantee, with targets agreed at the start of the project. First place is not a target in the contract, because the order of the four non-ad spots is decided by Google's systems, and the rules of that commitment are described in guaranteed SEO.

How much does it cost to rank first on Google?

The cost to rank first on Google depends on which spot the company is competing for. With ads, the cost grows with every click and stops when the campaign stops. For organic results, the map, the featured snippet, and the AI summary, Google does not charge for impressions or clicks; the investment is the SEO project, whose price depends on the number of searches targeted, the competition in each one, and the current state of the website. We build the proposal after looking at the top of the company's searches, so the budget goes to the spots it can realistically hold.

Frequently Asked Questions

The time it takes to rank first on Google depends on the spot being targeted. An ad can appear at the top as soon as the campaign is approved and for as long as there is budget. The Maps pack responds to changes in the Business Profile and reviews, but also to the searcher's distance, which the business does not control. The first organic result takes the longest, because it requires a dedicated page, a technical foundation, and more authority than the competitors for that search. In each case, Busca Orgânica tracks each spot by its own metric: average position in Search Console for organic and Business Profile performance for the map.

Ranking first on Google and appearing in the AI answer are different goals, although they share the same foundation. The first organic result is a position in the list of links, decided by the ranking algorithm. Google's AI summary cites pages as sources for an answer it assembles, and a page can be cited without being first in the list. Outside Google, assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity have their own criteria, addressed by GEO. In both cases, the page must be indexed and answer clearly, which is why SEO comes first.

When a competitor ranks first on Google for your search, the first step is to see which spot they hold, because each one calls for a different response. If it is an ad, they pay per click, and competing for that space is a paid media decision. If it is the map, check the category of your Business Profile and remember that the searcher's distance matters. If it is a featured snippet, your page needs to answer the question right at the start. If it is organic, the competition starts by comparing their page with yours, and copying the competitor's text does not solve anything.

Ranking first on Google on mobile can differ from desktop, because the smaller screen shows fewer blocks before the first link and the device's location matters more in local searches. On mobile, the map and the AI summary may take up the entire first screen, and the first organic result only appears after scrolling. Google primarily uses the mobile version of a site to crawl and index pages, which is why Busca Orgânica reviews each page on mobile before publishing. Search Console lets you filter average position by device type.

Ranking first on Google Maps depends mainly on the Google Business Profile, but the website also counts. Google ranks the local pack by relevance, distance, and prominence, according to its official local ranking tips; the website helps with relevance when the service page is linked to the profile, and with prominence because the business's web presence is one of the signals considered. That is why Busca Orgânica links the profile to the right service page, not just the homepage. The distance between the business and the searcher remains outside any company's control.

A single page can rank first on Google in more than one spot for the same search, but the spots it can reach are the content-based ones. The AI summary cites pages that are already in the index and can be shown in regular search, so the same page can serve as a source for the summary and appear in the organic list just below. The featured snippet also reproduces text from an indexed page. The Maps pack, however, displays the Business Profile, not the page, and the ad depends on a campaign. For another service or another city, the search changes, and each one requires its own page.
