The short answer to how a manufacturer shows up in AI answers is this: by publishing, on pages that bots can read, the technical data buyers use to filter suppliers, and by getting that same data to appear on third-party sites the AI already consults. ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity do not know the factory by its business card. They build the supplier list from spec sheets, catalogs and listings they find in writing. If the standard met, the alloy, the capacity range and the minimum order are not in text, the assistant has no way to put the company in the answer, no matter how good its production is.
What questions does an industrial buyer ask ChatGPT?
An industrial buyer asks AI the same way they write a requisition: with the item, the specification and a delivery constraint. They almost never name a brand. The table shows five typical questions from purchasing, engineering and maintenance, with the filter each one hides.
| Question asked to the assistant | The filter inside the question | The data the page needs to show |
|---|---|---|
| Who manufactures chemical anchors with pull-out testing for fastening to concrete? | test and application | test results, reference standard and recommended substrate |
| Which company does CNC machining of 316 stainless steel parts, in small batches, near Guarulhos? | material, process, batch size and region | alloys machined, minimum batch accepted and cities served |
| Which company rebuilds speed reducers and provides a teardown report? | service with documentation | service steps, report template and how bench time is communicated |
| Which Brazilian electrical panel manufacturers are ISO 9001 certified? | certification | certified scope, certification body and expiration |
| What is the difference between SAE 1045 and SAE 4140 steel for shafts, and who sells bar cut to size? | technical comparison followed by a supplier request | alloy comparison table and cut-to-size service with tolerance |
The fourth and fifth questions start as technical doubts and end by asking for a name. A page that explains the alloy comparison and, at the same address, offers cut bar stock serves both halves of the question. A page that only lists the product serves the final half, and one that only explains the theory serves the first.
Where does AI get the names of industrial suppliers?
AI gets the names of industrial suppliers from two places: what the model learned in training and what the assistant searches on the web at the time of the question. In manufacturing, the sources linked in answers fall into six types, and each one calls for a different action from the factory.
- Manufacturer website: the product sheet and production capacity page, when they are in indexable text.
- Distributor and technical dealer catalogs, which sometimes describe the item in more detail than the manufacturer itself.
- Industrial marketplaces and procurement portals, which organize specifications into standardized fields.
- Member lists of trade associations and employer unions in the segment.
- Lists of certified companies, maintained by certification bodies.
- Trade press and trade show catalogs, with exhibitor lists and application stories.
On Google, AI features start from the same index as search, as described on the page AI features and your website (Google Search Central). A spec sheet that is not indexed, therefore, does not make it into Google's AI summary either. Outside Google, each assistant has its own bot and criteria, and the test needs to be run on each one.
How a manufacturer shows up in AI answers through the spec sheet
The spec sheet is the passage AI can repeat with confidence, which is why it is the centerpiece of how a manufacturer shows up in AI answers. What to publish on the website, in this order:
- One page per product line, with the name the buyer uses (code, standard, material) in the title, not just the trade name.
- A specification table in HTML: dimensions with tolerance, material or alloy, operating range, standard met and minimum order. The same table in a scanned PDF or an image is harder to read for bots and for buyers opening the sheet on a phone.
- Described application: which machine, line or structure the part works in, and where it is not recommended. An honest "not suitable" is also data the assistant can cite.
- Capacity and certification with backing: certificate scope and expiration, and capacity the factory actually meets for the batch ordered.
- Structured data markup using the Schema.org vocabulary, so that product name, manufacturer and technical properties are explicit to machines.
- A quote request on the sheet itself, because a buyer arriving from a citation already knows what they want.
On a machining website, the sentence "we work with a variety of materials" answers no question. The sentence "we machine carbon steel, 304 and 316 stainless and aluminum, even in single-part batches" answers the entire second row of the table, if it is true at the factory.
What to publish outside the factory's website?
Outside the website, the factory needs its name and data to appear identically in the places where buyers and AI already look. Three fronts carry weight in the industry:
- Distributors and sales reps: they receive the same sheet, with the same product name and a link to the manufacturer's page. A mismatch between the website and the distributor makes the answer mix specifications or cite only the reseller.
- Associations and certification bodies: the member listing and the list of certified companies need to show the current name and the correct domain. An old legal name and a deactivated website are common findings in these listings.
- Trade press and trade shows: an application story, with the client's problem and the technical solution, becomes a source that talks about the factory without being the factory talking about itself.
What is outside the factory's control?
Part of the AI answer does not depend on any manufacturer, which is why no GEO vendor can promise the factory will be cited. Outside the company's reach are:
- The assistant the buyer chooses and whether web search is active in that conversation.
- What the model learned in training, before the new spec sheet existed.
- The exact wording of the question, since "stainless steel supplier" and "small-batch 316 stainless machining" retrieve different sources.
- The history and memory of the asker's account.
- What competitors publish in the same period.
The factory controls the quality, consistency and availability of what it publishes. The model chooses the sources for each answer.
Which mistakes take a manufacturer out of AI answers?
- The entire catalog on one "Products" page, with photos and trade names, no specifications. To AI, it is a page about nothing in particular.
- Capacity or certification claimed without backing. The assistant may repeat the data, and supplier qualification knocks the vendor out later, with the buyer already suspicious.
- A distributor with a more complete sheet than the manufacturer. The answer cites whoever explained it best, not whoever made it.
- Assistant bots blocked by the hosting firewall. OpenAI separates its search bot from its training bot on the page OpenAI bots (GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User), and the specific work with this assistant is in showing up on ChatGPT as an answer source.
- Testing with the brand name. Asking whether your company makes an item always brings up your company. The test that counts is the buyer's question, without anyone's name.
Where your manufacturing company should start
There are 159 manufacturing projects in the Busca Orgânica base since 2021 (Busca Orgânica client base, Oct/2026). For a manufacturer, the first deliverable we build is the list of buyer questions, written from the catalog and from what the sales team hears during quoting, and tested on the assistants before any change to the website. This test shows, line by line of the catalog, how a manufacturer shows up in AI answers at day zero and who holds its place.
The work follows our own search engine optimization methodology, with SEO, GEO and AEO in the same project, because the spec sheet that ranks on Google is the same one the assistant reads. The concept of GEO, for those new to the subject, is in the post what is GEO and where the term came from. The full service, for all assistants, is GEO to get your brand cited by AI, and the industry breakdown, with the table showing where industrial sales stall, is in SEO for manufacturing.
If you want to know which suppliers AI recommends today when your buyer asks about your product, ask Busca Orgânica for a test with your catalog's questions.
